Wind-wave Modeling
Hurricane Katrina
Hurricane Katrina is the costliest natural disaster and one of the five deadliest hurricanes in the history of the United States. Among recorded Atlantic hurricanes, it was the sixth strongest overall. At least 1,836 people died (Knabb et al., 2005).
Numerical Results
We used an adaptive quadtree wind wave model (Tsai et al., 2013) to simulate Hurricane Katrina.
- The simulation domain is 7^6 X 7^6 (m).
- The simulate time is set from 2005/08/22 00:00 UTC to 2005/09/01 00:00 UTC of totally 240 hours.
- Multimedia 1 gives the simulation result.
- Comparisons of significant wave heights between the measurements and models at buoy 42040 are given in the following figures.
- The Table gives the error, bias and computing time for our numerical models.
